When assassins ambush her best friend, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing herself as one of a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light, and a queen of blood. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven elemental magic trials. If she fails, she will be executed...unless the trials kill her first.
One thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a fairy tale to Eliana Ferracora. A bounty hunter for the Undying Empire, Eliana believes herself untouchable--until her mother vanishes. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain and discovers that the evil at the empire's heart is more terrible than she ever imagined.
As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world--and of each other.
Furyborn is the first book in an epic fantasy trilogy that spans the lives of two young women separated by millennium, but bound by one prophecy. the legend of the sun and blood queens. In Furyborn we alternate between two POVs so you follow both women's in their own timeline. This allows readers to find out what must have happened in both their timeline.
“We all have darkness inside us, Rielle,” he said, his voice rough. “That is what it means to be human.”
I like fantasy books with multiple points of view. I think you always have that you like someone POV over the other. We have Rielle's story line that is set way back in a fantasy court setting that you see more in other fantasy books. the power plays between noble houses. We see that she has powers that the nobles are testing her in a set of trials to see if she is in control over them. Also Rielle's backstory is very sad. Something has happened in her past and that is why she is now. And I feel like you can feel what she feels and understand why she is the way she is. and I feel like a lot of readers would enjoy her storyline in this book more than Eliana's storyline.
“Some say the Queen was frightened in her last moments. But I like to think that she was angry.”
Eliana is a very strong, smart young woman. I love her role as a morally gray assassin for hire, but we will see some very big growth in her when she needs to confront her own demons, and needs to understand who she is. I liked her from the beginning of the book she so protective over her younger brothers who we also see some in this book, also Eliana remind me of one of my favorite characters Vin of the Mistborn series written by Brandon Sanderson
“Perhaps if nothing else, what’s happened has taught you that there is more to life - and even to war - than simply staying alive.”
The beginning chapter of this book is so good that I think this is the best I have ever seen in a fantasy novel. We are drawn into this story from the start and we want to see what has led up to that. I feel that only helped me get into this book because I thought that this writing style was a little bit harder to get into other wise.
“We live in a world where good kings die and those foolish enough to hope for something better are killed where they stand.”
In conclusion, Furyborn is a very good start for a new fantasy trilogy with very good and strong main characters. And i’m curious to see where this story will take us.
