When the Lightning Girl’s spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?
Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother’s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.
As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare’s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.
King’s cage is the third novel set in the red queen series. written by Victoria Aveyard. The red queen series consists of four books and a novella collection added as book five. It's a young adult series with fantasy and dystopian genres. I will warn you that there may be spoilers for the first two books in this series.
There were a few changes made in the third novel in the red queen series. First of all, this book has a map. This was something I missed in the first two books and made me so excited to finally see the world. Also this book has different points of views throughout the book. In this book we follow Mare, she is our main character through the red queen series, she has been taken captive by the prince maven. She is held captive for the most part of this book used against the scarlet guard, a rebellion group she had joined before captivity. You see that Maven still has feelings for Mare throughout the book and that is mentioned multiple times but he says that he loves her in the epilogue. Throughout the book there are a few assassinations attempts on the life maven, the last is happening at his wedding when the scarlet guard is saving Mare. The vibes of this book are way more darker and serious than the first book. but there are still a few funny moments throughout the book. The last bit of the book is slow and for me very confusing and left me unsatisfied. We also don’t really see Cal in this book like we did in the first two books. and he was a character I really liked.
“ I know better now. I know who I am. I am Mare Barrow. Not Mareena, not the lightning girl. "Mare."
Overall, this book left me disappointed I had at the start very high hopes. but the pacing of this book wasn’t for me. I was easily confused reading this book and the ending was not what I wanted. I missed a real cliffhanger like the last book. I will take a break from the series and will be reading a different book between the fourth book in the series.
